Today’s difficult situation in the global energy market requires the continuous development of technologies in the usage of renewable fuels, the main requirements for which are energy, environmental, and economic efficiency. One of the available renewable energy sources is biomass, both in the form of primary wood and in the form of wood and agriculture processing waste. This study, conducted by researchers from various research institutions, including U_CAN partner National Technical University of Ukraine „Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute“, explores innovative methods for improving biomass boiler loading efficiency.

The article examines a method for loading biomass waste into a boiler unit, focusing on maintaining the gas tightness of the boiler’s working chamber by creating a «plug» of biomass as it moves through the cylindrical channel of the screw feeder. The study investigates local biomass wastes such as sunflower husks, coniferous wood sawdust, and walnut shells, which were used without prior processing (e.g., drying or grinding).

Key findings include:

- Sawdust from coniferous wood has a significantly higher angle of internal friction compared to sunflower husks and walnut shells, making it less suitable for the feeder.

- Sunflower husks proved to be the most effective material for creating a reliable «plug», with the study providing empirical data on the relationship between the density of the sunflower husk layer and compaction pressure.

The research also offers practical guidelines for designing screw feeders to optimize biomass boiler performance, including geometric and operational parameters based on experimental data.
