We are proud to highlight a significant academic contribution by our partner Yevhen Terekhov of Joanneum Research, whose paper "Recovery of the Energy System of Ukraine Towards the Development of Renewable Energy" was recently published as part of the 6th Borobudur International Symposium on Science and Technology (BIS-STE 2024). This research marks a notable step in supporting the U_CAN project's overarching goal: the decarbonisation of Ukrainian cities in alignment with the European Green Deal.
Yevhen’s paper presents a forward-looking analysis of Ukraine’s post-war energy transition, focusing on the strategic development of renewable energy sources. Using comparative cost assessments and regional potential modelling, the study identifies wind and solar energy as the most viable options for a climate-neutral energy system. With a projected increase of renewables to 70% of electricity supply by 2050, the paper highlights both the urgency and the opportunity in rebuilding Ukraine’s energy infrastructure with sustainability at its core.
This work is not only an academic achievement but also a practical contribution to shaping Ukraine’s future energy landscape. As U_CAN works toward a greener, more resilient urban future, research like this strengthens our shared commitment to sustainable recovery and European integration.
