U_CAN project featured in Ukraine Pavilion of COP29 Azerbaijan conference "Ecocide, Climate Neutrality, and Urban Green Infrastructure in War Times”

On November 21, 2024, the Ukraine Towards Carbon Neutrality (U_CAN) project was featured by its current coordinator Shanmathi Rajkumar in a session at the Ukraine Pavilion of COP29 Azerbaijan conference, titled "Ecocide, Climate Neutrality, and Urban Green Infrastructure in War Times." The session addressed Ukraine’s environmental challenges and climate action efforts amidst the ongoing war.

Key Highlights:

Community Resilience and Urban Green Infrastructure: The session began with a presentation on Ukrainian communities' efforts to protect urban green spaces during the war, focusing on the iTree4UA project. This initiative, launched by the Ukrainian Ecological Club "Green Wave", uses iTree Eco to integrate trees into community values. An interdisciplinary course from Uppsala University highlighted the project as a case study, demonstrating its global relevance.

Ecocide and Legal Frameworks: The discussion then turned to the issue of ecocide, examining its historical context and the legal implications both in Ukraine and internationally. The environmental destruction caused by the war, including the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Station disaster, was also addressed.

U_CAN's Role in Ukraine’s Climate Strategy: The session concluded with a presentation of the U_CAN project, which connects Ukrainian cities with EU partners to support climate neutrality and sustainable reconstruction. Through knowledge exchange, pilot projects, and innovations, U_CAN is setting new standards for climate resilience and positioning Ukrainian cities as leaders in the EU’s Climate-neutral and Smart Cities Mission.

This session underscored the importance of continued collaboration and innovation in addressing Ukraine’s climate challenges and advancing its reconstruction efforts.
