One of the most significant achievements of Vinnytsia's pilot project in 2026 has been the completion and presentation of a comprehensive study on the current state of the small Tyazhyliv River, led by the Institute of Urban Development.
Throughout 2025, the team carried out a wide range of research to build a full picture of the river's condition: geodetic surveys, chemical water analysis, hydrological and sanitary assessments, and botanical studies of the surrounding flora, complemented by sociological studies, online surveys, and direct conversations with residents. The sociological component proved a particular highlight, revealing local attitudes toward the river and the community's vision for its future use and development.
At a joint workshop in January 2026 with expert and civic community, local self-government bodies, and the South Buh River Basin Water Resources Management Authority, participants outlined immediate next steps: restoring riverside vegetation, tackling invasive species, cleaning the riverbanks, formalising protective buffer zones, and engaging residents and volunteers in ongoing monitoring. Yurii Holubiev, an expert in water ecosystem restoration, described the river's current state close to an "ecological crisis," noting that it is largely associated by residents with pollution and neglect. Yet several stretches along its banks already form part of daily city routes and hold genuine potential to become recreational spaces.
These findings now form a strong foundation for the next phase of the project: developing design sketches and a spatial concept for the river's restoration.
A note on naming: while many are accustomed to the name "Tyazhylivka," extensive consultations with experts, including historians, have led to the recommendation of using the name "Tyazhyliv."
