Lviv has taken another step towards modernizing its urban infrastructure and integrating with European standards. The city has officially become a member of the POLIS international network, joining forces with European leaders in the field of sustainable mobility.
This significant event was first announced at the second All-Ukrainian Mobility Forum held in Lviv on September 16-18, and the official membership signing took place on October 2, 2024, during the Civitas Forum in Parma, Italy. POLIS is a network that has united European cities and regions since 1989 to collaborate on innovative solutions and policies aimed at sustainable mobility development.
Joining POLIS is a crucial step towards modernizing the city's mobility infrastructure. Lviv will gain access to cutting-edge European experience and innovations in urban transport, which will help address the challenges posed by the war and the need to update infrastructure. Cooperation with POLIS will enable the city to develop solutions that contribute to creating an inclusive, safe, and environmentally friendly environment for all residents.
As a member of POLIS, Lviv will develop a Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP) that includes the following key areas:
Completing the launch of the electronic ticket and implementing a Public Service Obligations model to improve public transport accessibility.
Expanding cycling infrastructure and optimizing public transport routes to reduce dependence on private cars.
Improving accessibility of streets and urban spaces for all residents, including people with disabilities.
Thanks to membership in POLIS, Lviv will also have the opportunity to attract funding for participation in research and implementation of innovative solutions, such as developing electric transport and integrating intelligent mobility management systems.
Joining POLIS will contribute to the gradual transformation of Lviv into a modern, environmentally friendly, and comfortable city for every resident, increasing the level of safety and accessibility of urban infrastructure and providing new opportunities for its development in close cooperation with European partners.
