U_CAN Kyiv pilot: research recommendations receive positive feedback and are presented to city transport authorities
In October 2026, representatives of Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute presented the results of Task 4.3 of the U_CAN project and the developed Recommendations on the use of Kyiv’s underground space for a systemic reduction of greenhouse gas emissions from transport to two key stakeholders: the Academy of Construction of Ukraine on 2 October and the Department of transport infrastructure of the Kyiv City State Administration on 8 October.
The recommendations bring together research on the potential of underground transport infrastructure, including prospective road tunnels and metro development, alongside morphological modelling, satellite monitoring, transport flows and opportunities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The research aims to support sustainable urban mobility, climate neutrality and the long-term development and recovery of Kyiv.
At the meeting with the Academy of Construction of Ukraine, the research received an official positive assessment, signed by the Academy’s President, Ivan Nazarenko. The Academy recognised the scientific novelty and practical importance of the work, particularly its integrated approach to transport, environmental, logistical and safety challenges. It also expressed its intention to disseminate the findings through its regional and sectoral branches, construction companies and design organisations, and to recommend that the relevant departments of the Kyiv City State Administration consider the proposals for potential implementation.
During the meeting with the Department of transport infrastructure, the Kyiv pilot team presented the proposed solutions and discussed their practical relevance and potential application in future transport planning. The recommendations were officially handed over for further examination. The Department’s representatives expressed preliminary interest, with formal feedback expected after reviewing the materials.
These meetings mark an important step towards connecting U_CAN research with professional practice and municipal decision-making. The Kyiv pilot team looks forward to continuing the dialogue with city authorities and exploring opportunities to apply the recommendations in Kyiv’s future transport development.
