U_CAN First Synergy Workshop

The inaugural U_CAN First Synergy Workshop marked a pivotal moment in fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange between Ukrainian Pilot Cities and CNSC-Mission Cities. Held on November 26, 2024, this event brought together a diverse group of participants, representing approximately 40 individuals from across Europe and Ukraine.

The workshop brought together representatives from Ukrainian Pilot Cities (Ivano-Frankivsk, Khmelnytskyi, Lviv, Vinnytsia, and Zhytomyr) and CNSC-Mission Cities (Bratislava, Dresden, Kosice, Leipzig, Thessaloniki, and Wroclaw), alongside special guests from the Directorate-General for Research and Innovation, SUN4Ukraine Project, and other Ukrainian non-pilot cities. The event was supported by U_CAN partners, including teams from TUD and AU, and hosted by Wroclaw University of Science and Technology (WUST).

Workshop Highlights

This inaugural session launched the Knowledge and Experience Exchange Sessions (KEES) within the U_CAN project. The workshop emphasized:

  • KEES Methodology Introduction: Presenting strategies for capacity building.

  • Action Plan Development: Beginning the design of actionable steps for climate-neutral solutions in Ukrainian cities.

  • Twinning Activities Initiation: Creating the first pairings between Ukrainian Pilot Cities and CNSC-Mission Cities.

The workshop included insightful city introductions, where Ukrainian cities outlined their priorities and specific needs, while Mission Cities showcased their expertise and willingness to support. A structured matching process, informed by ex-ante questionnaires, played a crucial role in pairing cities based on complementary needs and expertise.

Key Outcomes

The workshop concluded with significant achievements:

  • Initial Twinning Links: Facilitating meaningful connections between Ukrainian and Mission Cities.

  • Enhanced Collaboration Understanding: Identifying mutual strengths and opportunities for future partnership.

  • Next Steps Agreement: Establishing a roadmap to refine the action plan and support the transition to climate-neutral solutions in Ukrainian cities.

Gratitude and Forward Path

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all the participants for their time, enthusiasm, and valuable contributions. The engagement from Ukrainian Pilot Cities, CNSC-Mission Cities, and guests was instrumental in ensuring the workshop's success.

Special thanks to our Mission Cities—Bratislava, Dresden, Kosice, Leipzig, Thessaloniki, and Wroclaw—for their readiness to share experiences and guide Ukrainian cities on their journey toward climate neutrality.

This workshop is just the beginning of a collaborative journey aimed at driving impactful and sustainable transformations. We look forward to building on this strong foundation as we continue to work together to achieve climate-neutral solutions in Ukrainian cities. Together, we can achieve more.
